Gary Heminger, Jane Heminger’s husband and member of the Ohio State Board of Trustees, said at a virtual groundbreaking ceremony he was proud of his wife’s past work and believes in the board’s vision for “ transforming health and improving lives.” The Heminger family pledged a naming gift for the building in 2021 after Jane Heminger’s career as a nurse. These features include air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind, according to the WELL v2 Building Standard. Van Dromme said Heminger Hall, located at 1577 Neil Ave., will be the first Ohio State building to be WELL-certified, meaning it received passing scores in its features of the environment that impact human health and wellbeing. “To have an environment be as supportive of health and well-being as our program here at the university just aligns sort of what we do and how we think or teach or practice or work with the spaces that we’re in,” Van Dromme said. Laurel Van Dromme, chief of strategic partnerships and special projects at Ohio State, said the construction of Heminger Hall and renovations to the first floor of the connected Newton Hall cost $30.7 million. The hall is designed to ease student experience through natural-based design, modernized lecture halls, a kitchen and small areas to take a break from what can be a lengthy program. Heminger Hall, an educational building in the College of Nursing, opened to the public Monday and is centered around a design that promotes health and wellness opportunities for students and faculty. The project has a LEED Gold goal.The Ohio State University will be opening a new home for the College of Nursing. Finally, the design also included a complete upgrade of the exterior landscaping, including the installation of new previous pavers all along the main entry area. Additionally, we facilitated the removal of the entire existing roof down to the deck, with the installation of all new roof insulation and a new single-ply roofing membrane. Meeting all building codes to allow for CNG buses inside of the building required major upgrades to the HVAC systems, upgrading all of the existing interior high bay lighting to LED, and the installation of a new gas detection system as well. A new perimeter loop driveway that provides access around the entire building.The conversion of the existing indoor diesel fueling and bus wash into a new locker room and premium interior cleaning space for buses.A new building addition that includes a new 2-lane bus wash with an associated Mechanical Room, and a new Facilities Shop.A covered CNG Fueling Station with 3 fuel islands and a small service building.A new CNG Compressing Plant with 8 compressors, capable of fueling a fleet of 180 buses daily.The primary components of the Project are: The Bowen team also engineered the electrical infrastructure and coordinated the efforts for the installation of new battery electric bus (BEB) chargers. The facility is now COTA’s second facility to offer compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling. This project gives the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) two opportunities to innovate sustainable transportation.
